2024 Annual Report

Keshet
Annual Report

2024

In 2024, we found the way forward. Together.

In a year marked by political polarization, devastating and harmful anti-LGBTQ+ policies, and rising antisemitism: You showed up. We showed up, together. Just as we have done for over two decades. And just as we must right now.

Keshet’s work to build Jewish communities and spaces of belonging and safety, our Jewish voice for LGBTQ+ equality echoing in the halls of power, is desperately needed. No matter what obstacles stand in our way, lo libatel — we will not give up. With you as our partner, we will continue forward, showing up, and finding joy together amidst it all.

Keshet Vision and Mission

Keshet envisions a world in which all LGBTQ+ Jews and our families can live with full equality, justice, and dignity. We strengthen Jewish communities. We equip Jewish organizations with skills and knowledge to build LGBTQ+ affirming communities, create spaces in which all queer Jewish youth feel seen and valued, and advance LGBTQ+ rights nationwide.

Education & Training

Sparking Change at Jewish Institutions

Our Education & Training team bolsters Jewish institutions — synagogues, day schools, JCCs, federations, summer camps, and more — to live their values as communities of equality and belonging. Through individualized consultations, trainings, and our cohort-based Shivyon: Keshet’s Equality Project, our Education & Training team sparks change across Jewish life, from the views of our leaders and community members to the policies and programs of our institutions.

"Joining the Shivyon was an extension of that longstanding commitment to equity and belonging and helped us see areas where we could improve."

- Joanna Schnurman (she/her), Office Administrator, Adath Israel, Connecticut

“For decades Adath Israel has striven to be a community where LGBTQ+ folks feel not only welcomed, but valued. Joining the Shivyon Equality Project was an extension of that longstanding commitment to equity and belonging and helped us see areas where we could improve…We reviewed our by-laws, forms, and communications to eliminate non-inclusive language, worked with our library to indicate books with LGBTQ+ content, increased the size and scope of our Pride Committee, developed an employee policy handbook, and converted single gender bathrooms into all-gender bathrooms…Every organization, even ones doing good work (perhaps, especially ones doing good work), can benefit from fresh eyes!”

Joanna Schnurman (she/her), Office Administrator, Adath Israel, Connecticut

Youth Programs

Empowering LGBTQ+ Jewish Youth

Keshet creates community where LGBTQ+ Jewish youth and allies can thrive. From our in-person Shabbatonim (weekend retreats), to our weekly online programs, to nurturing youth leadership in planning and leading our programs, we cultivate spaces where youth can strengthen their confidence, connection, and pride. Many queer Jewish youth who participate in Keshet programs are growing into the leaders and changemakers our Jewish community — and our country — need.

"The community and support I felt helped deepen my sense of belonging and pride in both my faith and my queerness."

- Sydney G. (they/them), Keshet Texas Shabbaton Participant, Oklahoma

“I loved attending the Texas Keshet Shabbaton because it created a warm, inclusive space where I could connect with other queer Jewish youth who share similar experiences and values. The community and support I felt throughout the weekend helped deepen my sense of belonging and pride in both my faith and my queerness.”

– Sydney G. (they/them),  Keshet Texas Shabbaton Participant, Oklahoma

Community Mobilization for Equality

Mobilizing Jewish Communities for LGBTQ+ Rights

As more and more dangerous anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and policies are introduced, Keshet is mobilizing Jewish communities nationwide to fight back. We partner with Jewish organizations to prioritize LGBTQ+ equality within their social justice agendas and with secular LGBTQ+ movement partners to bring a Jewish voice to civil rights campaigns.

In 2024, we launched Tzedek Tzedek Tir’VOTE! — our Get Out the Vote campaign. Keshet contacted over 192,000 voters, worked with partner organizations to bring advocacy for LGBTQ+ equality inspired by Jewish values to their communities. We closed 2024 preparing for the fights ahead for LGBTQ+ rights, especially the attacks on the trans, nonbinary, and intersex communities. Together, we are sending a clear message: Our values as Jews compel us to protect and advance the dignity and rights of LGBTQ+ people.

"If anything happens here, or if at any point you or your group feels unsafe, you are welcome to join our group and march with us."

- Benjamin Stinson-Hurwitz (he/him), Statewide Candidate Programs Manager, Equality Florida

“Many Jewish participants in our Florida contingent were nervous about being visibly Jewish during the 2024 Miami Pride parade. Positioned to be marching in front of our partner, Equality Florida, one of their leaders approached Keshet staff and said: ‘I know things are still pretty stressful in the Jewish community and especially at Prides. If anything happens here, or if at any point you or your group feels unsafe, you are welcome to join our group and march with us.'”

– Benjamin Stinson-Hurwitz (he/him), Statewide Candidate Programs Manager, Equality Florida

LGBTQ+ Jews of Color

Cultivating Communities of Belonging for LGBTQ+ Jews of Color

In 2024, Keshet prioritized and expanded community building programs for LGBTQ+ Jews of Color, led by our Jews of Color Program Manager. We continue to cultivate a growing LGBTQ+ Jews of Color community across the country that celebrates and invites people to embrace their full selves within Jewish spaces. We are engaging LGBTQ+ Jews of Color in both online and in-person programs. Our staff also organized educational sessions and developed resources specifically for Jewish leaders and organizations who are not LGBTQ+ Jews of Color, empowering them to become stronger, more effective allies.

"The first time I ever felt like I truly belonged was at the Keshet Shabbaton for LGBTQ+ Jews of Color, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since."

- Emet Marwell (they/them), Keshet Neshamot/Rainbow Souls Shabbaton Participant, Massachusetts

“Someone from my shul recently asked me where I felt like I truly belonged, and I realized I had never felt that way at our shul. The first time I ever truly felt like I truly belonged was at the Keshet Shabbaton for LGBTQ+ Jews of Color, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. I get teary-eyed just remembering Friday night. After we lit the candles, someone started spontaneously singing shalom aleichem, and we all joined in together as a group. I got chills. It’s sometimes hard to reconcile the parts of myself that I see as conflicting, but at the Shabbaton, I was just mind-blown. We were all existing together in that space without having to explain our existence or presence. It was pure, unfiltered joy.”

– Emet Marwell (they/them), Keshet Neshamot/Rainbow Souls Shabbaton Participant, Massachusetts

Pride Month & LGBTQ+ Partnerships

Building Bridges at a Defining Moment

In a year marked by violence and suffering in Israel and Gaza, rising antisemitism, and relentless attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, Keshet’s voice and leadership was critical across Jewish communities, the LGBTQ+ rights space, and the broader progressive movement at the local, state, and national levels. For example: Ahead of June 2024, many LGBTQ+ Jews were anxious about safety and inclusion as Jews at Pride marches. To prepare, Keshet developed guidelines for Pride organizers and organized de-escalation training for Jewish communal staff and leaders, ultimately sponsoring over 50 Pride events. Jewish participants nationwide expressed relief and appreciation for Keshet’s role in creating the conditions for safe, joyous Prides.

“I felt isolated and alone — it’s so great to see a Jewish organization here. Thank you.”

DAVID PASSER LEGACY FUND

“Keshet called to me and David z”l because we were those ungainly teens, loved but knowing we were different. When we each came out, being gay seemed more important than being Jewish. But as young adults and as a couple, we realized that to be our whole selves, we needed to be part of the Jewish community and the gay community. We supported Keshet in the early years as Idit worked to bring a more progressive view of who could be Jewish in the larger community. Acceptance would never have been David’s goal. Full acknowledgement and participation always was. He would say, ‘We belong here, and we’re going to show you why, and how.’”

“When I first reached out to Keshet in 2015, I was struggling to help my parents understand and support my child’s trans identity. The guidance I received made all the difference. My parents and my child, who is now a young adult, have remained incredibly close and my parents now donate to Keshet in their grandchild’s honor. It means so much to see how far we’ve come as a family.”
