“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” Those words, written over 30 years ago by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, remind us that indifference can never bridge the divide of hate. And, today, they should serve as a call to action to all of us, and to the Movement for LGBTQ equality.

This spring has been a stark and stinging reminder that racism, and its strategic objective, white supremacy, is as defining a characteristic of the American experience as those ideals upon which we claim to hold our democracy — justice, equality, liberty.

Trailblazing LGBTQ allies in South Jersey

“We want to make sure a client walking in feels welcome,” said the Associate Director of JFCS and LGBTQ ally, Beth Wynne. Wynne said that the JFCS’s journey started three and a half years ago. The service center joined a cohort of agencies under The Network and started all day training to manifest their mission for equality. Training came under partnership with the LGBTQ Jewish, support, and training organization Keshet, and the JFCS of Philadelphia.

Keshet Brings Training Program on LGBTQ Inclusion to Canada

Dozens of representatives from 14 Jewish organizations gathered at the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre (MNJCC) in downtown Toronto on March 4 for a first-of-its-kind training on LGBTQ issues in the Jewish community hosted by Keshet, a U.S.-based organization that focuses on equality in Jewish life for LGBTQ people. The session was part of Keshet’s leadership project, which trains the heads of Jewish organizations to build a yearlong LGBTQ inclusion plan for their organizations, and the participants in attendance represented the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, various Hillels, synagogues, care homes and more.

Kol Hadash Congregation embraces LGBTQ inclusivity

Kol Hadash Humanistic Congregation, which is housed inside North Shore Unitarian Church in Deerfield, has been a leader in LGBTQ-inclusivity since its founding in 2001. The congregation emerged from the now-defunct Congregation Beth Or and celebrates Humanistic Judaism. And yet, this year they have made changes to become even more welcoming.
