The LGBTQ+ Jewish story didn’t begin in the modern era. It begins in Torah.
On June 11, Keshet was honored to host an evening of Torah study led by Saffron Mala Kaplan, where we explored expressions of queer love, gender, and identity found throughout Jewish texts through the lens of LGBTQ+ Jews of Color. Together, we examined stories including Ruth and Naomi, David and Jonathan, Adam, and Joseph, and considered what these narratives can teach us about the diversity that has always existed within Jewish life.
Participants engaged with these sacred texts while also reflecting on the gorgeous images from Keshet’s Flowers for Our People photo exhibition. Both these images and these holy texts beautifully revealed the important truth: LGBTQ+ Jews have always been here. We are, in fact, as old as Torah. Watch the full recording to learn more!
