Why We Need to Show Up for Trans Youth in Colorado…and Everywhere Else

As a Denver resident, I joke that I live in a bubble when it comes to protecting LGBTQ+ rights, especially for trans youth. Even so, I eagerly volunteered for Keshet’s recent Text Bank Tuesday session, which focused on anti-trans ballot measures in Colorado. Keshet made it easy and accessible, with good music to set the tone, and clear guidance for our group of volunteers.

But within a few minutes of texting, I realized my naivety. Several stinging text responses came back in rapid fire, reminding me that plenty of folks, even in purple Colorado, do not value protecting our trans youth. My heart sank.

But then messages in our Zoom chat started to ping as other volunteers shared encouraging texts they had received. “As a trans woman, I want to thank you so much. This makes all the difference.” I felt the camaraderie and gratitude and continued texting.

Even though I have textbanked in the past, this election cycle is historically different. The misinformation spreading about our community is enabling hate for so many marginalized groups, including our children. Proposed and existing legislation threaten anti-LGBTQ+ safety, rights, and dignity.

Like many of you across the country, I feel the gravity of this moment, as a parent, as a Colorado resident, and as a Keshet staff member.

While my bubble in Colorado may have burst, this text banking experience reminded me why we need to show up for trans youth in Colorado and for all trans youth, now more than ever.

With every text, call, and moment of connection with voters, we are making a difference—not just for trans youth but for our greater LGBTQ+ Jewish community.

“Thank you. This is inspiring me to move my disgust to action and voting.”
