Transgender Day of Remembrance & Resilience

November 13, 2024

By Rabbi Micah Buck

Our hearts remain broken. Our rage still simmers. The outcome of the election points to an alarming impact on LGBTQ+ people, Jews, and all of us. In the midst of our grief and rage we are also galvanized. We at Keshet are more committed than ever to the work we do — together with you — to cultivate spaces of affirmation and belonging, and to advocate forcefully, Jewishly, for the rights of transgender, nonbinary, gender-expansive, and all LGBTQ+ people. We know firsthand how deeply it is needed.

On Transgender Day of Remembrance & Resilience (TDOR), we honor the power of trans people in the face of hardship, and mourn the memory of transgender and nonbinary people whose lives were lost in acts of hateful violence.

In this moment, celebrating and observing this day is a sacred act of resistance, for trans people, for our broader LGBTQ+ and Jewish communities, as we stand at the precipice of what’s been happening and what’s to come. It is a deep reminder that we have been in this fight for generations, and we possess the hard-won tools to win it.

Those rising back to power have told us their plan: to continue to strip trans people of their rights, to grasp at power by stoking fear and hatred of our communities, and to try and erase our identities outright. We saw them spend $215 million dollars on anti-trans ads, demeaning and attacking us for political gain. We will take them at their word, and we will fight back, with all our strength, creativity, and power.

But first, we invite you to mark this day:

❤️ Remember, mourn, and thank the trans people we have lost.
❤️ Ensure their memories remain a blessing.
❤️ Celebrate your resilience and the resilience of those you love.

Please check out Keshet’s resources — spiritual, personal, communal — to help you find your own grounding or to stand firmly in solidarity with trans folks in your community.

Chazak V’Amatz. Be Strong and Courageous. Know that we are here for you, for our community, for Jews and allies ready to continue the fight for trans equality even when it feels far away.
