We have good news and bad news to share with you. First, the bad: the politicians who pledged to protect the rights of all Texans have already introduced a raft of anti-LGBTQ+ bills. Senate Bills 625 and 249, in particular, would prohibit access to the gender-affirming care that many LGBTQ+ Texans need to live happily and healthily.
These politicians do not speak for us. Last week, we made our presence known at the Texas State Capitol during Texas Interfaith Advocacy Days. We met with the House Human Services, House Public Health, and Senate Human Services committee staff to make the case for access to healthcare and bodily autonomy – and we did so as Jews, speaking of our commitment to trans health because of our religious tradition, not in spite of it.
This is what we do at Keshet: make our voices heard in the face of oppressive legislation and work to ensure that our legislators protect every person’s dignity and rights. We are not backing down. In Texas and across the country, we will be a strong, salient voice of Jewish equality.
