LGBTQ+ folks have always been represented in our membership throughout our 125+ year history, and currently they form majorities in our org leadership and staff. In particular, LGBTQ+ folks have been on the forefront of revitalizing our organization in the 1980s, and as an intergenerational community, many of our members have been part of LGBTQ+ liberation movements historically and currently. Our LGBTQ+ programming currently focuses on caucusing spaces, such as our Trans and Nonbinary Group, and community convening spaces, such as our Intergenerational LGBTQ+ Shabes. Members regularly report feeling grateful for the opportunity to get to know other LGBTQ+ folks across the generations. LGBTQ+ folks also lead the majority of our arts work, including our annual Purim celebration, Gragger, a community-led purimsphil and dance party featuring gender expansiveness, drag, and all forms of LGBTQ+ expression. Gragger in particular has become a fixture in Jewish LGBTQ+ nightlife in Boston.
Boston Workers Circle is a 125+-year old organization and community originally founded as a mutual aid society for working class Yiddish-speaking immigrants from Eastern Europe. Our founders were socialists, communists, and Bundists (Jewish Labor Bund), who had a vision of economic emancipation for the working class while still embracing and celebrating cultural identity. In modern times, BWC is a secular, cultural, Diasporist home for leftist and progressive Jews in Boston. Our vision for community continues the work of our founders, and views Jewish Diaspora cultures--Yiddish, Ladino, Judeo-Arabic, and many more--as worthy of celebration and resourcing as we work to build a better world together. Our programming covers the areas of social justice organizing, education for youth and adults, and cultural programming.
