Ensuring our LGBTQ+ congregants feel fully included in our community has been a particular area of focus for us over the last several years. Specific ways our synagogue seeks to welcome LGBTQ+ congregants include: Marching in the Aurora Pride Parade in 2024 and 2025 Participating in inter-faith services supporting trans youth, etc. Helped to plan the NILA (Naperville Interfaith Leaders Association) Pride Service and actively participated in that service We hold annual Pride shabbat services Our Board formally adopted a set of values that were translated into a yard sign; among other messages this sign includes the message “love is love” prominently visible We have Keshet signage in all bathrooms and synagogue clergy/staff offices (“LGBTQ safe space”). We also have an “All Genders” bathroom in our school wing We have adopted changes to our traditions to support trans children becoming B’Mitzvah We have updated forms for school/b'nai mitzvah/membership to be gender-inclusive We have pronoun pins/name tags for use in our synagogue The Rabbi's sermons often touch on LGBTQ+ inclusivity (especially at High Holidays when most people are present) Recognizing Trans Day of Remembrance and other significant dates
We have not yet had LGBTQ+ training for staff but we have been trying to have it and it should be done this school year. Also, the fact that we do not currently have any LGBTQ+ clergy, board members, etc. is only because of the current make-up of those groups. We are certainly welcoming of having LGBTQ+ members of these groups!
