To members of the United States Senate:

With the House’s passage of the Equality Act on February 25th, America now looks to you to enshrine protections for LGBTQ people into law. As rabbis, cantors, and other Jewish spiritual leaders, we call on you to pass the Equality Act.

Jewish tradition teaches that each individual is created B’Tzelem Elohim, in the Divine Image (Genesis 1:27), and therefore deserves dignity in all aspects of life. For too long, LGBTQ Americans have endured discrimination in employment, education, medical care, housing, public spaces, and government services. This cannot continue under the fig leaf of religious liberty, which too often has been used as an excuse to deny people basic rights.

We reject strongly and expressly the idea that religion should be used by government to constrain anyone’s rights. The Equality Act does nothing to hamper anyone’s exercise of their religion; rather, it contributes to religious liberty by freeing LGBTQ individuals to live their lives unhampered by someone else’s ideas about religion. For us, that is the religious principle.

While recent decades have brought significant advances toward equality, they remain a patchwork of local and state laws and court rulings. LGBTQ people will still face the threats of harassment and discrimination in more than half the states in the nation. It is particularly important for us as Jewish leaders to affirm our strong support for the Equality Act. We know too well the slippery slope a society stands on when any segment of the population is granted only second-class rights or forced to rely on the good will of the party in power. Extending the protections of the Civil Rights Act to include sexual orientation and gender identity is an essential step towards making this “one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Our eyes, and our children’s eyes, are watching. Will you shirk your responsibility, or will you pass the Equality Act and enshrine these core commitments to basic human dignity into federal law?
