Enjoy a meal and conversation with Rabbi Jay Michaelson: In the current moment of constitutional crisis, climate crisis, AI crisis, and many more we could name, the heart of Jewish tradition offers wise, contradictory advice: both engage and transcend. This impossible, yet vital, gesture is reflected in countless binaries: immanence and transcendence, obligations to others and obligations to God, cyclical time and linear time, presence and history, spirituality and justice, even the two triangles of the star of David. And, as the core of the Kabbalah insists, these binaries are in constant change, in and out of balance, separating, uniting and transcending one another. All this may sound very abstract, but that’s just one star of the triangle! It’s also as real-life as defending democracy, welcoming the stranger, and finding resources for personal resilience. Not is not an unprecedented time, from the perspective of Jewish wisdom; now is the time Jewish wisdom was made for.
