AJWS Global Circle and The Young Adult Community at Congregation Emanu-El
invite you to join us for an evening of appetizers and activism:
LGBT RIGHTS IN AFRICA: A VOICE FROM THE FRONTLINES
Here in the U.S. we are making strides in the fight for marriage equality. But around the world, LGBT people are fighting for basic rights—and in some cases fighting for their lives. Join us for an intimate conversation with a Kenyan LGBT activist working to enable LGBT people to be out and proud without fear. We’ll hear Ken*’s extraordinary story and learn how we can help LGBT people worldwide gain the freedom to live and love in safety and dignity.
Beverages and light appetizers will be served

About the Featured Speaker
Ken was born in the mountains of northwestern Kenya to a nomadic pastoralist family. He was raised in a rural environment characterized by drought, cattle rustling and border conflicts, and a very conservative value system. Against numerous odds, he completed high school and went on to teacher training college, working as a high school teacher before entering into full-time activism. He is a founding member and currently the coordinator of Upper Rift Minorities (URM), an organization promoting the rights of LGBT people in pastoralist communities and a refugee camp in northwestern Kenya. URM strives to increase community acceptance while providing peer support to LGBT people and advocating for access to health care and justice.
